Science Fun

If you’re looking for a fun and educational trip for your group, I highly suggest iFly in King of Prussia. https://www.iflyworld.com/king-of-prussia/.

After planning a trip months in advance for a local homeschool group and wondering if the price might deter some from attending, I am so glad it turned out to be a hit!

The day started with the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Education program which was led by an awesome educator who kept the kids engaged. They were given an interactive presentation, hands on activities and we ALL enjoyed some awesome water demos in the wind tunnel. There was a short intro on what to expect from our 1 minute flight time.

We were given a short fly once inside the tunnel then the instructor gently guided us up for our 30 second high fly. Included in the price was the education program, hands on demos, and one minute regular fly and high fly. The kids all left with a smile on their face and a cool little swagbag with a few goodies inside from iFly.

It was a very cool experience. If you’re interested in doing this activity with a group you will need a minimum number of participants. It was a fun event and we are glad to have had the chance to try it out!!

Back in the Saddle

Taking a break from outdoor riding for the month of February is a good idea for most people, right?

We like to lay low during this month, hibernate and look forward to Spring coming. We did not ever guess there would be days approaching 70 degrees in February!

So after a month hiatus, and itching to get back to her lessons, wouldn’t you know that upon returning today we bundled back up with our winter gear, because yes it is STILL Winter although last weeks temps would say otherwise.

After riding in snow, rain and bitter cold… you know that it is something you love.

Both my kids found their passions around age 9. For my son it was, (and still is) baseball. My daughter found horseback riding and has immersed herself into learning as much as she can.

Being a Single(homeschooling)Parent …

Homeschooling as a SINGLE parent.

( My take on it after 2 years)
Are there any struggles that come to mind?

Yes, some…..These might be a few….

It’s all on your shoulders.
You have to work, cook, clean, teach, be there to just listen while they have so much to say on what is so very important to them.

You have no other person that is in this with you to unload on.
You need to keep it all in order, ensure that you are in fact not failing your children….avoiding the pit of comparison of other people’s children who are heading in a TOTALLY different direction than are yours.
You have to remember one size does not fit all, and not only do you need to remember that, YOURS is the ONLY voice to remind you of that.
Feeling like if you take time for yourself, you are taking away from your kids.

Knowing that you will screw up and it’s okay…(and realizing that YOU have to tell yourself  because you don’t have a partner to remind you of this very important fact.)

There’s some humor in it all too…..

My Daughter: “ Mom, remember when I told you about that person I met in my game who homeschools too, they live in the Mountain Time Zone. Did you know that it is 3pm there right now.” ( It was 5pm at the time of this discussion).

My Response: “ Oh….she’s homeschooled? I had no idea,  I’m happy to see you have determined what time it is based on our work on time zones though.”

Daughter: “ Mom, We had a whole talk the other night when you were laying in bed about how cool it is she homeschools. We talked about lots of things that night.”

My Response: “ Was I awake?”

Parenting a 16-year-old and a 10-year-old is the most AWESOME thing in the world.

I am grateful to have them in my life.

There are times when they are both out for the night at a friend’s house and I am home alone. The first hour I am filled with the idea of having quiet “me” time.
Although, It does not last long….

By the 2nd hour I am feeling the awkward silence in our house, the stillness that comes with the lack of energy in the space. The bickering between the siblings that I have given up being the referee of. The dishes that seem to magically appear in the sink, the shoes and coats left strewn about in our tiny home. The music playing loudly from my son’s room, or the sound of his guitar. The sound of laughter from my daughter when she is skyping with friends and having so much fun. The discussions about upcoming music events, purchases that one of them want to make on-line, their plans and goals they have for the near future, their heart breaks and their feelings about things that are happening in their lives. The talks about how certain situations cause them to react or feel a certain way. Talks about life in general…….

THESE are the moments that I do in fact cherish. THESE are the moments that I know I am doing it right, a home is a home with one or two parents.

It is about providing the love, the listening, the caring.

Yes, there are times when I have worked many hours and I come home and have to listen to them unload about things that are so important to them in that moment, then have to straighten up the house a bit more than what they may have already done and right before I head to bed,

I remember……

They won’t always be here with me. I am grateful for them now.

Find your inner voice and listen.

 You can do this.

Owls and Owl Pellets

Did you see what happened today????  THE SUN WAS SEEN!!!!

It has felt like forever since we had a glimpse of the sun, let alone feel its warmth.

So needless to say I was beyond happy to spend the day in our favorite classroom, the woods.

After a very informative presentation on Owls and an even more engaging pellet dissection where the kids were able to take a look at what tasty treat was enjoyed last by a particular owl. We had the pleasure of enjoying this absolutely perfect sunny day hiking along the paths of PennyPack. Although muddy from all the rain we have had, it was a walk full of interesting stops to glimpse at different sights along the way. The final destination was a spot which was scoped out earlier by Pete  who works at the center, he was able to locate an owl for us to observe.

Taking turns glimpsing through his viewer, we were all able to look at this peaceful bird in its undisturbed setting. Although he knew we were there appreciating his beauty, he seemed to not be bothered at all.

Homeschool events are held at this location. There are links below for more information.

Such a fun day learning and seeing owls!!!

Studies have proven over and over again that music lessons are one of the greatest gifts you can give to you children! Science shows that children who learn to play an instrument, even for just a few years, reap many of the following, wonderful benefits.
They are better in reading/math and overall academically
They are better able to focus
They have more self-esteem and play better with others
They score higher in standardized test scores
They have more creativity
To read more about the incredible benefits of music lessons please take a look at this article https://mic.com/articles/108022/science-just-discovered-something-amazing-about-what-childhood-piano-lessons-did-to-you#.nwR8TzO3R

At Dayle Music, we believe that learning to play an instrument should always be fun! We use games, songs, stickers, and a prize reward system that keeps our young students excited and motivated. Children as young as four can start with private lessons or join a small group class. Our small group class is currently located at Newtown Parks and Recreation (new locations coming in the fall!) Learning in the Moment

Sometimes opportunities are presented and we can use them to teach and become involved with what is happening.

Such is the situation happening at Standing Rock . Short of actually heading to North Dakota, we have found ways to be part of this historic event that is unfolding . Through efforts of coming together and making others aware of what The Water Protectors are there doing, to getting together care packages we have been helping to share the information that is unfolding.

This is not an issue that has emerged overnight, this has been happening for many years in fact. If you would like to get involved, there are many sites to gain further information. Some that I can attest to are :

Also available is an online syllabus : https://nycstandswithstandingrock.wordpress.com/standingrocksyllabus/

Local events that also are happening:

It is not over until we stop destroying  Mother Earth .

There are too many alternatives to continue this destructive path.

~Creative Learning ~

Learning about Van Gogh at The Uncorked Artist in Peddler’s Village is always more fun when shared with about 25 other homeschoolers!

That is just what we did on Monday, this informative and fun art class with be offered at an affordable rate of $20 per child once a month. Be sure to check out the website for more information on when the next class will be happening. Sign up early as space is limited!

Continuing with painting, because one can never paint enough……..

Paint in the Moment http://www.paintinthemoment.com/ also offers classes at The Lord’s New Church in Bryn Athyn. Recently held was a wonderful class that started with a calming, focused meditation that allowed us all to quiet our minds and open our hearts. The result, these beautiful paintings.

For upcoming homeschool classes and workshops that are offered at Homegrown @ LNC you can go to https://www.facebook.com/HomegrownLNC/?fref=ts.

Offerings include:  painting, needle felting, clay creations, photography, music lessons, dance, yoga and more!

To wind down our creativity, we had the opportunity to create beautiful Terrariums at Greenology Organic Living. Also located in Peddler’s Village, the kids were able to learn about these creations and then make their very own. https://greenologyorganics.com/
